New Generation Health Center

Providing reproductive health information and services to at-risk youth in San Francisco.

New Generation Health Center is a clinic of the University of California at San Francisco Department of Obsterrics, Gynecology and Reproductive Services. Their goal ti decrease the number of unintended pregnancies and sexually transmitted infections among high-risk youth in San Francisco.

New Gen has built a reputation with San Francisco youth as a place with “Answers, not Attitude”.

Services are targeted to urban youth ages 12-24. In addition to the full range of reproductive oriented clinical services. New Gen addresses health disparities in the community by offering outreach and education programs to the community.

The Garden Project at KIPP/Gateway School, San Francisco Promotes Healthy Eating and Fitness for Children Through Community Garden Cultivation

This after-school program is a collaboration between the KIPP Middle School/Gateway High School, the UCSF Primary Care Pathway—Pediatric Residency Training Program, and the UCSF National Center of Excellence in Women’s Health in a continuing effort to battle childhood obesity by developing new approaches to dietary habits. The Garden project enables the participating children to learn better nutrition by growing their own food and have a direct experience in nature by cultivating plants and trees in the community garden.

This program is a continuation of our discussion on combating childhood obesity in underserved communities.

Brian Auerbach interviews Aaron Watson, a teacher at the school who runs the program and Emily Roth, MD, director of the UCSF Primary Care Pathway—Pediatrics Residency Training Program.

Shaken Baby Syndrome and Prevention Project
Shaken Baby Syndrome and the prevention project coordinated by the UCSF Women’s Health Resource Center. Shaken Baby Syndrome (SBS) kills or seriously injures many newborns and infants annually. According to state data resources, San Francisco documented about 60 SBS incidents annually in recent years.

The increasing incidence of infant victims of Shaken Baby Syndrome (SBS) is a tragedy for the child, the family and the community. Shaken Baby Syndrome is a collection of signs and symptoms resulting from violently shaking an infant or child. This momentary loss of control by the caregiver can lead either to the death of the baby or to life-long permanent and severe neurological damage.

Brian Auerbach interviews Joanna Laffey of the UCSF Women’s Resource Center and training coordinator of the SF Shaken Baby Syndrome Prevention Project, Dr. Chris Stewart, a pediatrician at San Francisco General Hospital and UCSF and Scott Jucean, a parent with direct experience and a statewide leader in shaken baby syndrome prevention.

Centering Pregnancy® Program at UCSF

CenteringPregnancy®, a program in the UCSF Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology and Reproductive Sciences offering new options in prenatal care to patients and their families.

Brian Auerbach interviews Sharon Wiener and Suzanne Seger, Certified Nurse Midwives who conduct the program and Sabrina Rascón, a program coordinator with the Women’s Health Resource Center.

The CenteringPregnancy® program is designed to provide prenatal care in a group setting. CenteringPregnancy® is co-sponsored by the Women’s Health Resource Center in the UCSF National Center of Excellence in Women’s Health.

UCSF Lesbian Health and Research Center and the National Lesbian Health Summit

Brian Auerbach will be discussing the UCSF Lesbian Health & Research Center and upcoming National Lesbian Health Summit with Diane Sabin, DC and Maria Cora. Dr. Sabin is executive director of the LHRC and Ms. Cora is associate director of the LHRC and a program coordinator with the UCSF National Center of Excellence in Women’s Health. The LHRC is dedicated to improving the health of lesbians, bisexual women, transgender people, and all families. To achieve this goal, LHRC creates comprehensive programs of research, education and trainings, public events and community collaborations.

The National Lesbian Health Summit takes place in San Francisco between March 6th and 8th. This Summit is focused on addressing lesbians, bisexual women, queer women, and transgender people. All lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex and queer (LGBTIQ) communities, and friends and allies, nationally and internationally are welcome to attend. The summit approaches health issues from the perspective of those who face disparities and discrimination and who also generate health and resilience everyday.

UCSF University Community Partnership Program

Brian Auerbach interviews Partnership Program Council co-chairs Naomi Wortis, MD and Lynda Boyer-Chu, RN, MPH.  Dr. Wortis is Director of Community Programs and Associate Clinical Professor in the UCSF Department of Family & Community Medicine. Ms. Boyer-Chu is a nurse and mentor with the San Francisco Unified School District.

The University Community Partnerships Program (UCPP) was established by UCSF Executive Vice Chancellor Eugene Washington in the spring of 2006 to coordinate the many existing partnerships between UCSF-affiliated individuals/groups and San Francisco-based community organizations and support new partnerships. Their mission is to build collaborative relationships between UCSF and the community, promoting civic engagement, fostering community health and well being and enhancing the environment for education, research, employment and patient care at UCSF. The UCPP serves as a bridge between UCSF and the community, emphasizing partnerships that value and respect the assets and diversity of both.

A Healthy Heart for Women: Cardiovascular Health and Its Importance for Women

Brian Auerbach leads the discussion about Go Red, a national program focusing on creating awareness of the importance of cardiovascular health in women and how to achieve it, with Anne Thorson, MD, an Associate Professor of Cardiology in the Department of Medicine at UCSF and Rajni Rao, MD, an Assistant Professor of Medicine in the division of Cardiology at UCSF.

Dr. Thorson is Associate Director of the UCSF Center for Prevention of Heart and Vascular Disease with specific interests in cardiovascular prevention and wellness, non-invasive cardiology and cardiovascular disease in women.  Dr. Rao has clinical interests in general cardiology, cardiac imaging, and women’s health; she is the Associate Director of the Adult Echocardiography Laboratory at UCSF.
